I think it's increasingly important for people to just turn up to these things too. Getting out of the house is the first big step. Volunteering with the PTA comes after you turn up to a meeting. Turning up to a poker night comes easier than organising one. Etc. One leads to another, but man, it seems people are increasingly choosing to stay in the comfortable and unscary place in their living room.

Absolutely! I talk all the time about the decline in attendance at extracurricular events on campus…and it’s definitely not just students who haven’t been turning up but also faculty and community members. There are some ways we’ve found to combat this (some of it involves adjusting the start time, providing dinner, and offering extra credit), but getting anyone to agree to go out is much, much harder than it used to be.
